"Let justice roll like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream."
From shepherd to prophet, Amos thundered against hypocrisy and oppression.
He called for a worship that moved beyond hollow songs and into a life of truth.

"I was no prophet... nor a prophet's son...
Just a herdsman,
called by fire...
to speak."
You lie in beds of ivory
While the poor sleep in the dirt.
You sing your hollow melodies
But justice bleeds beneath your skirts.
I see your altars —
I smell your feast —
But I will not hear your noise.
You trample truth to feed your pride,
Your worship has no voice.
Let it roll... let it break...
Let justice flow for the voiceless' sake.
Not one more song, not one more lie —
Let righteousness rise like a storm-lit sky.
You buy the poor for silver's weight,
You sell the needy for a sandal's lace.
You stretch your arms in holy dance,
But blood still stains your sacred place.
I struck your crops.
I shut your rain.
Still, you would not turn.
So now the lion lifts its head —
And now the fires burn.
"Woe to those who are at ease in Zion...
I despise your feasts.
I will not smell your offerings...
Take away your noise...
Let justice roll like waters —
And righteousness like a mighty stream."
Let it break — let the stream arise,
Let truth be seen with open eyes.
No more gold to hide your sin,
The plumb line falls... again... again...
"Then the Lord took me as I followed the flock...
and the Lord said to me:
'Go. Prophesy... to My people... Israel.'"
Amos 5:21–24:
"I hate, I despise your feast days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies. ... But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream."
Amos 7:14–15:
"Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel."
