The Story Behind the Album
Music and lyrics by Thomas J. Allen
Winds of the Skete is a 13-track biblical symphonic metal concept album by Zephoniel, dedicated to the Desert Fathers and Ascetics. It enters the barren deserts and isolated caves of early Christian monasticism, where prayer, fasting, temptation, and spiritual warfare shaped lives of radical devotion.
Heavy riffs and aggressive rhythms collide with soaring orchestration to portray the struggle against demonic forces, the darkness within, and the relentless pursuit of holiness. The album honors those who withdrew from the world to seek communion with God in silence, sacrifice, and unceasing prayer.
“(Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.”
— Hebrews 11:38 (KJV)
“But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret.”
— Matthew 6:6 (KJV)
